  9. What is RamNet?
  10. ===============

  12. RamNet is a background, memory resident program which enables you to:
  13.  
  14.  *  Run your own Bulletin Board System -- in the background!
  15.  *  Have  Electronic Mail (E-Mail) across the nation or across the  globe
  16.     today....with no hardware other than your PC and modem!
  17.  *  Do  file  transfers  (both  upload  and  download)  totally  in   the 
  18.     background,  so you can continue your normal processing  tasks in the
  19.     foreground.
  20.  *  Run  SCRIPT files that allow you to upload and download to any  other
  21.     computer system.
  22.  *  Utilize  RamNet  as a "normal" communications package  via  a   user-
  23.     selectable  Hot-Key.  Start  transfers in the foreground and   switch
  24.     them  to  the  background -- only a  keystroke  away!  The   transfer
  25.     continues while you work on something else.
  26.  *  Incoming E-Mail may be immediately printed if you desire.   You'll be
  27.     notified, in any case, when mail has arrived.
  28.  *  RamNet uses the XMODEM protocol for error free file   transfer.  Both
  29.     Checksum  (with  about 99% error detection) and  CRC (with  at  least
  30.     99.9% error detection) have been  implemented.
  31.  *  UUCP,  the  protocol  of choice between UNIX sites is now   available
  32.     between RamNet sites as well. Your RamNet site  will appear as a UUCP
  33.     allowing file transfers to take place  between UNIX systems and  your
  34.     PC in "native" mode.  You can  send and receive UNIX mail to and from
  35.     your PC -- in the  between UNIX systems and your PC in "native" mode.
  36.     You  can   send and receive UNIX mail to and from your PC  -- in  the 
  37.     background! A free update to handle UNIX News is in the works, too!
  38.  *  Now  your PC can act as a Telex machine,  too!  Your incoming   telex
  39.     messages  are  stored and/or printed without requiring an   expensive
  40.     dedicated machine.
  41.  *  Use RamNet as a Source Librarian!  You can specify a given   download
  42.     directory  as a "locked directory".  Files which are  downloaded  are
  43.     "locked" from future downloads until  released.
  44.  *  Wildcard  Transfers via a special Batch file allow you to   customize
  45.     which files you wish to transfer in one shot.
  46.  *  The following Baudrates are supported:  110,  300,  600, 1200,  2400,
  47.     4800, 9600, 19200, 38400.
  48.  *  Easily works with any modem, intelligent switch, or direct,  hardwire
  49.     connection.
